When I started studying music therapy at college, I was naively thinking that a college degree will guarantee a job.
It certainly is a way to start a career that you want.
It's just that no one taught me that academy and career are not exactly the same thing. They can be related. but school=career equation does not exist.
Looking back, it's a "duh!" fact. But as a college kid, I didn't know.
People might have informed me. but it didn't click in my brain. Because I didn't know.
No one can teach you anyway about real life.
Many give advice. Good ones.
But they are not entirely applicable for my life.
When I graduated, this was a dilemma I encountered.
Most of job description says this: minimum two-year experience required.
Or this: two-year experience preferred.
Whether they prefer or require, they mean the same.
Where do young professionals who freshly graduated start to get experiences?
If I find where there is no prerequisites,
it's a job where they do not require your qualification therefore
the pay sucks or the experience is mostly likely unrelated to your future glorious career.
so, either I suck it up and start somewhere
or I wait for amazing connection
or i start another schooling.
I love going to school and learn.
I also love learning through experiences.
I value both and understand that the balance between study and experience would be ideal.
Some advise that being in debt is horrible so suck up and work.
Some advise that education opens more opportunities and it is an investment.
Some advise that book smart isn't getting you anywhere.
Some advise that work experiences cannot beat qualification and titles you earn from school.
All good points.
It's a dilemma for me.
all their advice seem like what they regret not doing. or what they found proud of doing.
when I work, I want to go to school and learn more.
when I am at school, I want to get out there and work.
it's a dilemma for me.
just a simple part of human nature.
